Frequently Asked Questions About Allergy Services

What is an allergy specialist called?

An allergy specialist can be an allergist, immunologist or ENT (otolaryngologist). Allergies are a very prevalent issue that directly impact the ear, nose, and throat, which is why some ENTs specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies. At ENT Carolina, our allergy specialists are experienced ENT doctors.

What type of allergy test does an ENT perform?

ENTs use the standard methods to test for allergies, which are designed to identify specific allergens that may be causing your symptoms. These tests help pinpoint the exact triggers of your allergic reactions, which allows your doctor to develop a personalized treatment plan to provide you with the best care.  At ENT Carolina, we offer:

  • Skin Testing: Small amounts of allergens are applied to your skin to check for reactions.
    • Prick test
    • Intradermal test
  • Blood Tests: Depending on your health history and symptoms, blood testing may be recommended in addition to or instead of skin testing. This test measures antibodies in your blood to identify allergic responses.

After conducting these tests, the allergist will share the results with you and evaluate any potential co-occurring conditions, such as sinusitis, that may be contributing to your symptoms. If necessary, we offer allergy cough treatment and seasonal allergies treatment to help alleviate your discomfort. Please note that we only do allergy testing on patients ages 10 and up.

Will insurance cover my allergy treatments?

Most insurance plans offer coverage for a range of allergy-related services, but the specific coverage details can vary depending on your insurance provider and plan type. Generally, insurance covers:

  • Allergy testing
  • Allergy medications
  • Immunotherapy (allergy shots)
It's important to note that coverage for certain treatments or medications may be subject to deductibles, co-pays, or restrictions, so you should always verify the details of your coverage with your insurance provider. At ENT Carolina, our team is happy to assist you in understanding your insurance benefits and help with any questions about coverage.
